The Directorate of Politics and Governance, a political department founded by the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), has begun seeking for the support of Deputy President Yemi Osinbajo ahead of 2023.
Over the weekend, Timothy Olaniyan, the head of the department who had previously denied any support for the vice president’s presidency, said Mr Osinbajo, “a child of God,” was still the only person wishing to change the history of governance in Nigeria.
Speaking to reporters at the first conference of a political party called the New Era Nigeria (NEN), Mr Olaniyan said the country deserved a loyal leader.
“It is high time our eyes were opened. What we want is not those baits, we want somebody that would make a promise to our children and fulfil it,” he explained. “If you tell me education will be free, I want you to get there and make it free so that we will not continue to build up youths who have no future.”
In March, the RCCG set up a department to mobilize support for members of the party seeking nominations, a move that further narrowed the narrow line between religious and state discrimination in Nigeria.
A few weeks after the construction of the department, the church’s general overseer, Enoch Adeboye, said he was politically neutral and would not mobilize support for any political party because they were all his “sons.”
