The campaign manager of Bola Tinubu, Abdulmumin Jibrin has dumped the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) party.
Mr Jibrin took to Twitter to announce his defection from the party.
“I have done my best for APC,” Mr Jibrin said. “It’s time to move on. I will announce my new political party within the next 24 hours insha Allah. I will make a formal statement in due course.”
The former House appropriation committee chairman has been leading support groups for Mr Tinubu in northern Nigeria. It was not immediately clear why he decided to leave the ruling party, but concerns have been mounting in recent weeks that the APC may allow northern candidates to contest his ticket.
Mr Jibrin argued that southern candidates should be given privileges to run for the presidential ticket on an equal footing, but APC politicians in the north, including Jigawa Governor Abubakar Badaru, have announced their readiness to run for the 2023 presidential ticket.
