About 236 candidates are running for office in 36 Edo constituencies on the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) platform.
Competitors are those who have purchased Expression of Interest and Nomination forms from state and international parliaments.
Tony Aziegbemi, the party’s chairman in Edo, said on Wednesday that in Benin 17 of the candidates were vying for three senatorial seats.
He said 54 of them were vying for nine seats in the House of Representatives, while 161 were running for 24 seats in the House of Representatives.
He provided the details while speaking to reporters at a screening committee chaired by Ben Obi.
Mr Aziegbemi explained that the nomination was in compliance with the provisions of the Electoral Act, which states that parties should evaluate candidates as part of the primary election requirements.
“We are abiding by the rules of the Electoral Act ahead of the party primary elections,’’ he said. “It is interesting that in spite of the seeming problems the party has in the state, no time in its history have people purchased 161 Expression of Interest and Nomination forms.”
Speaking again, Mr Obi explained that the committee had done a good job and those who wanted to enter indicated that they would be vetted.
